Angelo Mathews and Lasith Malinga produced one of the great one-day international fightbacks to clinch an improbable victory for Sri Lanka in the first one day international match at Melbourne Cricket Ground on Wednesday (November 3), extending Australia’s losing streak to six international games since July.
The visitors seemed destined for a humiliating loss when they crashed to 8 for 107 chasing 240, but Angelo Mathews and Lasith Malinga kept fighting, spurred on by noisy support from a crowd dominated by Sri Lankan fans.
They compiled the highest ninth-wicket partnership in one dau internationals history, beating a 27-year-old record set by Kapil Dev and Syed Kirmani against Zimbabwe at Tunbridge Wells on June 18,1983 in the 1983 World Cup, and the 132-run stand left Australia’s confidence in tatters. Lasith Malinga belted his way to his first one-day half-century (56) and Angelo Mathews played the guiding hand with a wonderful unbeaten 77 as the pair raced towards their target with plenty of time to spare.
Ruwan Kalpage and Chaminda Vaas’ 76-run stand against Pakistan at Colombo on August 7,1994 was the previous best for Sri Lanka for the ninth wicket in limited overs international cricket.
** Lasith Malinga became Sri Lanka’s first and fourth batsman overall to hit a half century at number 10 in limited overs internationals. His 56 was the joint second highest score by a number 10 batsman in one day internationals. Zimbabwean Dougie Marillier made an unbeaten 56 against India at Faridabad on March 7,2002.
** Sri Lanka’s one-wicket victory was the smallest against Australia in terms of wickets. It was Sri Lanka’s second one-wicket win in one day internationals and 44th overall in limited overs international cricket. They also achieved one-wicket win over England at Adelaide on January 23,1999. The Islanders’ previous smallest victory in terms of wickets against Australia was two-wicket win at Colombo on April 13,1983.
** Xavier Doherty became the fourth Australian and 33rd bowler overall to take four or more wickets on debut in one day internationals.
The slow left-arm orthodox bowler from Scottsdale, Tasmania achieved this feat by taking four wickets for 46 runs in 10 overs. The most important victim in Xavier Doherty’s 4 for 46 was Kumar Sangakkara, who was guiding the chase with a stylish innings that ended on 49. Having seen Mahela Jayawardene trapped leg before by a skiddy arm-ball from Xavier Doherty’s second delivery in Australian colors. The previous ball, Xavier Doherty had picked up Chamara Silva, who injudiciously tried to slog over the leg side. His skied top edge was taken by a backpedalling Shane Watson at mid-on. It was a superb spell from Xavier Doherty. By the end of the match he’d added Nuwan Kulasekara leg before, but his efforts were not enough.
