Mahela Jayawardene Joins The Elite Club

Mahela Jayawardene became the third Sri Lankan and 13th batsman overall to score 9000 or more runs in limited overs international cricket.
The right hand batsman from Colombo achieved this feat by making his 36th run during his 39-run knock in the final of the Triangular series against Sri Lanka at Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium on Saturday (August 28). It was 307th innings of 326th match.
Mahela Jayawardene who made his international debut against Zimbabwe at Colombo on January 24, 1998, took 12 years and 216 days to reach this landmark.
Sachin Tendulkar (India-17598 runs in 442 matches), Sanath Jayasuriya (Sri Lanka-13428 runs in 444 matches), Ricky Ponting (Australia-13072 runs in 351 matches), Inzamam-ul-Haq (Pakistan-11739 runs in 378 matches), Sourav Ganguly (11363 runs in 311 matches), Jacques Kallis (South Africa-10838 runs in 303 matches), Rahul Dravid (India-10765 runs in 339 matches), Brian Lara (West Indies-10405 runs in 299 maches), Mohammed Yousuf (Pakistan-9624 runs in 282 matches), Adam Gilchrist (Australia-9619 runs in 287 matches), Mohammed Azharuddin (India 9378 runs in 334 matches) and Aravinda de Silva (Sri Lanka-9284 runs in 308 matches) were the other batsman to score over 9000 runs in limited ovetrs international cricket before Mahela Jayawardene.
The former Sri Lankan skipper scored 2822 runs at 35.27 with three hundreds and 20 fifties in 95 innings of 104 matches at home while he made 6181 runs at 31.69 with nine hundreds and 35 fifties in 212 innings of 222 matches outside Sri Lanka.
