Uncapped young pacers Josh Hazlewood and Peter George were the surprise inclusions in Australia’s squad for the upcoming Test series against India.
The 23-year-old right-arm pacer Peter George, whose action is similar to Glenn McGrath , has been fast-tracked into the Test squad after just two seasons of first class cricket for South Australia, during which he has played just 18 games.
Josh Hazlewood, 19, has already made his One-Day International debut and was the third highest wicket-taker in the Under-19 World Cup earlier this year. He also has been picked up on basis of his ability, having played just six first class games for New South Wales.
Phillip Hughes, the Australian opener, has returned to the Test squad while Off spinner Nathan Hauritz, whom Ricky Ponting had termed last month as a ‘lock-in’ for the India series and the Ashes, reclaimed his position as Australia’s No. 1 slow bowler after recovering from a foot injury but wicketkeeper Brad Haddin was deemed to have not sufficiently recovered from an elbow injury.
The 15-man squad led by Ricky Ponting will play two Test matches in India — in Mohali from October 1 to 5) and Bangalore from October 9 to 13.
Australia last toured India in 2008-09 under the leadership of Ricky Ponting and lost the four Test series 2-0.
